ABOUT KILOMETRES FOR KIDS
What is Kilometres for Kids?
Kilometres for Kids is a fitness challenge taking place over 31 days in March. Choose to walk or run 85kms over the month or cycle 300kms. By participating and fundraising for Starship, you will help keep the Starship Air Ambulance flying. And bring life-saving care to sick and injured children all over Aotearoa.
Is there a physical event?
Kilometres for Kids is a fully virtual event. You can choose to do your activity whenever and wherever it suits you.
You can connect with other Kilometres for Kids participants through our Facebook group.
Can I only walk, run or ride?
We have chosen these as they are popular activities, but you can choose to do other activities for your distance, eg swimming or wheelchairing. You just need to register your kilometres.
What if I don't want to choose one of the suggested distances?
If you don't want to choose one of the suggested distances, you can nominate your own. Kilometres for Kids is a month-long adventure. Choose a distance that can be done in short bursts daily, or on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
How do I record my fitness activity?
Go to your dashboard and click on ‘Log Activity’.
Here you can connect to your fitness app, such as Strava, Garmin or Fitbit so it automatically uploads to your dashboard.
Alternatively, you can enter your activity manually.
Make sure under your Strava Privacy Controls in Settings that your profile page and activities are set to ‘Everyone’.
Can I record steps for my activity?
Kilometres for Kids currently tracks kilometres. If you would like to track your steps rather than distance, you can simply convert your steps using a step converter such as https://www.thecalculatorsite.com/health/steps-km.php
Enter your steps into this online converter to find an estimate of how many kilometres you have done and then log them through ‘Log my kms’.
How do I change my activity distance?
When you are logged into your account, go to your dashboard and then click on the Log Activity tab. Here you can set your target distance. Just remember to click SAVE CHANGES further down the page.
Why is my activity not appearing on my fundraising page?
If you are logging your activity manually, it can take up to 20 minutes for this to appear on your fundraising page. Please ensure you 'save' your activity each time you log it otherwise it will not show up.
If you are logging your activity via a sync with Strava, Garmin or Fitbit it can take up to 24 hours for this to appear on your fundraising page.
Can I start logging my activity before March?
Absolutely! You can start your training as soon as your page is all set up. All activity recorded before March will be reset to zero at midnight on 28 February.
Note that the virtual map of NZ will be available on your dashboard during March only for you to track your progress.
How do I connect a fitness app?
If you track your workouts with Fitbit, Strava, MapMyFitness or Garmin your distances will automatically add to your tally.
- Download the Fitbit, Strava,MapMyFitness or Garmin app and set up your account
- Log in to your dashboard and click on the Log Activity tab.
- Under the heading Connect your preferred Fitness app, click your chosen app.
- Follow the prompts to connect your account
- When you next work out, select start your workout in the app on your phone. Once you end your workout, save your workout and your distance will be published to the tally on your page the following day.
If you have synced your app already but it is not working, please log in and re-connect it.
- Fitbit: You must start an activity and save it. If no activity is logged, then your cumulative activity will sync at the end of the day. If you are having issues, try syncing through BOTH your Fitbit and the Fitbit app on your smartphone.
- MapMyFitness: You must start your workout, stop your workout and then SAVE your workout.
- Strava: You must start your workout, stop your workout and then SAVE your workout.
- Garmin: You must start your workout, stop your workout and then SAVE your workout.
Your tally will be updated each day with the previous day’s distances.
Additional tips:
To accurately track steps, users need to start and stop an activity and then save it. This will then sync to the platform, usually within 24 hours.
There is one exception to this with Fitbit, depending on the settings you have in place on the platform.
Fitbit will count your cumulative steps taken throughout the day. So even if you didn't go on a run, you may have clocked up 10,000 steps during the day.
- If you use Fitbit and you log an activity, e.g. start, stop and save a run. This run will sync to the platform.
- If you use Fitbit and you do not log an activity, then at the end of the day this total step count/distance will sync to the platform.
Fitbit will not sync a logged activity AND cumulative activity.
To check your settings, navigate to:
Platform setup > General Setup > App Settings> Scroll down to Fitbit
There is a tickbox: Only pull in data from activities via "starting and stopping" the app.
If this is ticked, then the cumulative activity will not sync at the end of the day, and the app will work just like Strava, MapMyFitness and Garmin.
