My Kilometres for Kids challenge is dedicated to the memory of my friend, Dr Tonya Kara

Here we go again - a cycling challenge...

Today, 22nd January,  marks 8 years since my dear friend Dr Tonya Kara died. She was a paediatrician at Starship who cared passionately about child health and dedicated her life to her work.

Before she died she "coaxed" me to take on a cycling challenge that was absolute craziness because I had never really cycled before. But I did it - 600 kms around Sri Lanka in heat, humidity and rain to raise funds for bikes for disadvantaged school children in New Zealand. I was stoked to raise enough for 70 bikes.

But times have changed, fitness has dropped, and I haven't been on my bike for years.

So imagine the twist of fate that today - on the anniversary of Tonya's death - I saw this cycling challenge for the month of March, at exactly the time when I had also decided to try and return to fitness this year.

500 kms on the bike in March will be a challenge. I will have to get up early every day to get it done, which is a challenge in itself for an owl like me. But it seems right, and Tonya would be proud.

So please donate - for me, for Tonya, but most of all for the children of New Zealand who deserve an excellent air ambulance service funded by the Starship Foundation. Thank you for reading :-)
