My Kilometres for Kids challenge is dedicated to the celebration of my son, Walter
I’m taking on an epic challenge this March – and I would love support.
I’m taking on a month-long fitness challenge, Kilometres for Kids, to help keep Starship’s National Air Ambulance flying to children across the country who are critically ill or injured.
When Walter was 5 months old, he developed a sudden paralysis of his right arm. Doctors were concerned there was pressure on his spinal cord, and he needed an MRI, and possible surgery, urgently. Due to his achondroplasia, Walter needed the specialised expertise of the Starship anaesthesia and neurosurgery teams. The Starship's National Air Ambulance was called, and Walter and I made the urgent flight from Invercargill to Auckland. It's a mother's worst fear: to care for a critically ill child, and also have to fly across the country, leaving an equally worried husband and children behind. The Air Ambulance's dedicated Doctor and Nurse alleviated many worries during the transfer to Starship.
If you can, please donate to help me raise money for this incredible service, the only flying Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in Aotearoa. It’s on call 24/7 – and a specialist flight crew can be in the air in a matter of minutes.
