My Kilometres for Kids challenge is dedicated to the celebration of my niece, Valentina

This March I’m taking on an epic challenge that runs until April & I’d love your support along the way! 💞

✨ I’m lacing up my shoes for the Kilometres for Kids challenge -  the next two months I'll be moving, sweating & clocking up kilometres to support Starship’s National Air Ambulance.

This incredible service is the only flying PICU in Aotearoa, ready to fly anywhere in the country 24/7 to help critically ill or injured children.

If you’re able to donate, you’ll be helping keep this amazing team flying & saving Kiwi kid's lives. Let’s do this! 💪✈️

✨ A Surpise of Gold! ✨

Thursday 19th Mar
The next morning, Mawmaw and Pawpaw rushed out to the CBD. We already knew Valentina would be having an X-ray on her heart, as the lovely nurses had told us the night before. Her godfather & I made it our mission to grab some pizzas & drinks, but Mum called asking where we were & said there was a surprise waiting for me.

As I walked in, I was greeted by my brother & Dad. While my brother helped Valentina’s godfather with the pizzas & drinks, I rushed straight past them to her room. When I walked in, a nurse was speaking with Valentina’s uncle, who had come to visit. I brushed past quietly & there she was, lying there, watching all the movement around her. Her eyes were open. "Thank you Jesus I said in my heart"

“Hey Aunty!!” she said, giving me a big wave.

I can’t even explain how happy I felt seeing her awake & well.

The next day, she was strong enough to have her breathing tube removed & continued recovering on high flow oxygen. The day was filled with little special moments, eating lots of ice cream & flavoured milk, her parents reading books to her, her aunties singing & dancing for her (she was not impressed at all! 😳😂), Mawmaw cracking jokes & making her laugh, & plans being made with her godfather & Pawpaw. She also had visits from her godmother, great-aunties & great-uncle.

By the end of the night, she was transferred to another room, where she was blessed with her own TV & spent her time watching The Lion King & other Disney favourites. Through it all, she showed us just how strong & resilient she truly is. In the middle of all the worry & waiting, she brought so much light back into the room, reminding us that even the smallest smiles can mean everything. Watching her slowly return to herself was more than we could have hoped for & in those quiet moments, surrounded by love, we were reminded of what really matters most. 🥰

🚑 What was meant to be a routine procedure suddenly became something much more serious than anyone expected. 🚑

Tuesday 17th Mar
At 5am, Mum &  I made our way to North Shore Hospital to meet up with my brother, sister & my little niece, Valentina. It was meant to be a simple morning we thought, she was scheduled for a routine procedure to have grommets placed in her ears.

But what was supposed to be routine quickly turned into something far more frightening then any of us were expecting! 💥

During the anaesthetic, as doctors were placing the breathing tube, Valentina’s oxygen levels & blood pressure suddenly dropped. Fluid began to build in her lungs & she needed urgent support to help her breathe & stabilise her tiny body.

She was quickly transferred to the PICU (Paediatric Intensive Care Unit) for close monitoring. Her mawmaw rode with her in the ambulance, playing worship music & praising God over her the whole way, while my brother, sister & I rushed to Starship Children's Hospital to meet them.

In moments like that, you realise just how fragile and precious life truly is!  🥺🙏🏼 As Valentina was admitted into the PICU, her big brother & aunty arrived. It was going to be a long night & we all understood that now, it was simply a waiting game.

While we waited, we tried to pass the time the only way we knew how... Eating, talking & keeping each other company. Our conversations jumped from sea monsters to God, to the corrupt government & much more. We laughed when we could & there were plenty of coffee/Milo & vape breaks to get through those long hours.

Throughout that first night, Valentina was surrounded by so much love — her big brother, aunties, mawmaw, godmother, great aunt, & of course her parents, who never wanted to leave her side. 💛
